What is BLDC Motor?

Brushless DC (BLDC) Electric motors are popularly used in EVs due to their efficiency, reliability, and precise control capabilities. The BLDC motor uses a rotating magnetic field which is generated by the stator windings to drive the rotor shaft, which contains permanent magnets. These motor does not contain brushes for commutation. Commutation in BLDC motors is achieved electronically by multiple Sensors like Hall Effect sensors. The commutation by these motors is also achieved by sensorless algorithms. A sensorless algorithm is used to determine the rotor position, and the electronic controller adjusts the current in the stator windings accordingly.

What is PMSM Motor?

A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is a type of synchronous electric motor that uses permanent magnets on the rotor (also known as the armature) to create a magnetic field. The term “synchronous” in PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) refers to the fact that the rotor rotates at the same rate as the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator windings. This synchrony is achieved through precise control of the motor. The Stator and Rotor are the two most important parts of the PMSM motor.

The stator is the stationary part of the motor and contains the three-phase windings that produce a rotating magnetic field when energized. The rotor, or armature, contains permanent magnets that are generally made up of neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) or samarium cobalt (SmCo). When an electric current is passed to the stator windings, a rotating magnetic field is created. This magnetic field creates a voltage in the rotor due to the motion of the magnets, and the rotor aligns itself with the rotating field, resulting in synchronous rotation
